CASTELLAN (Antoine-Laurent). Lettres sur la Morée et les île - Lot 12
CASTELLAN (Antoine-Laurent). Lettres sur la Morée et les îles de Cérigo, Hydra et Zante. A Paris, chez H. Agasse, 1808. Two parts in 1 vol. in-8, [2] f., 112 p., [2] f., 156 p., [1] f. errata, contemporary half calf, smooth spine, red author and title page, gilt fillets, yellow speckled edges (spine uniformly faded, rubbing to spine, hinges and corners); First edition. 24 plates drawn and engraved by the author of landscapes, traditional costumes and monuments, and 2 folding maps engraved by J.B. Tardieu after Barbié du Bocage's survey. This is the work of painter, engraver and architect Antoine-Laurent Castellan (1772-1838), the fruit of his observations during a voyage to the Mediterranean between 1796 and 1799 at the request of the French government. From this voyage, he drew no less than three other publications of his notes and sketches, published over the course of ten years, as well as a number of paintings presented at the Salon between 1800 and 1808. He was most probably inspired by Vivant-Denon's Voyage en Sicile (1788), in which the latter was both author and illustrator. Castellan thus published his own compositions alongside his travel account in the form of letters. Unlike the publication by the famous diplomat and engraver Vivant-Denon, this is one of the first travelogues to be entirely conceived and written by a professional artist. It also marked a turning point in Castellan's career, as he switched from history painting to writing and engraving. In 1820, he published a new, greatly expanded edition of this first work. Roxana Monah, "Le périple méditerranéen d'Antoine-Laurent Castellan et les tribulations d'une carrière entre littérature et peinture" in Viatica, n°10, 2023. Handwritten bookplate of Ch[arle]s Rich[ar]d Tronchin to pdt: Charles Richard Tronchin (1763-1835) was a Swiss politician. Heraldic ex-libris labels of H[enri] Tronchin (1794-1865) and inventory label of his Bessinge library; heraldic ex-libris of M[aîtr]e Pierre Sciclounoff (1926-1997), Geneva lawyer; ex-libris R.N. (Chadenat, 2247; Blackmer, 298; Weber, 637).
