[Curiosa]. [GERVAISE de LATOUCHE (Jean-Charles)]. The Story - Lot 22
[Curiosa]. [GERVAISE de LATOUCHE (Jean-Charles)]. The Story of Gouberdom, Porter of the Carthusians. N.p., n.p., 1772. Two parts in 1 vol., in-8 format, frontispiece, IV f., 326 p., contemporary marbled havana calf, smooth spine, title and small gilt metal decorations, gilt edges, gilt inner roulette (scuffed; spine fully restored; restoration and reinforcement of the frontispiece on p. 8, pp. 53–56, pp. 67–68, pp. 109–110, and on all plates; a few small tears in the margins not affecting the text).
This edition was revised, corrected, and expanded under the supervision of the Holy Father, a fact illustrated by the title vignette depicting the Pope.
20 loose copperplate engravings, including the frontispiece, all of which have been restored primarily in the margins (one-sixth of plate 6 has been reinterpreted).
Our 1772 copy differs from those listed: the text is in fact preceded by a narrative in verse titled “On baise la mule du Pape, L’origine de cette cérémonie” (“One Kisses the Pope’s Mule: The Origin of This Ceremony”); however, “Le Chapitre général des Cordeliers” (a tale attributed to Alexis Piron) is missing; it is paginated continuously as 326 pages, including the word “end,” rather than 333 pages.
A famous 18th-century French erotic novel. The work was first published around 1741 under the title *Histoire de Dom B*** (Bougre)*, and subsequently under various other titles.
