Marcel VERTÈS (1895-1961) Portrait of Elsa Schiaparelli, circa 1937 Ink on paper, signed lower right (rubbing). 32 x 24 cm From their collaboration on the "Shocking" perfume advertising campaign for Schiaparelli in 1937, Marcel Vertès and Elsa Schiaparelli forged a deep friendship. This portrait features characteristic elements of the fashion designer, such as gloves, cigarette, headdress, posture and facial features. The quick, light style of the ink is reminiscent of Henri de Toulouse Lautrec. Marcel Vertès illustrated his drawings for the 1951 film Moulin rouge, and Elsa Schiaparelli designed the costumes. The type of representation could also herald Schiaparelli's "Cigarette" silhouette (1939).
