After a busy military career, the Duke of Ragusa, disgraced because he had been unable to put down the July 1830 revolt, went into voluntary exile and spent the rest of his life traveling in Austria, Russia, Turkey, Syria, the Holy Land, Egypt and Lebanon, as well as in the States of Venice and Sicily.
