POUQUEVILLE (François-Charles-Hugues-Laurent). Voyage de la - Lot 48
POUQUEVILLE (François-Charles-Hugues-Laurent). Voyage de la Grèce. Paris, Firmin Didot, 1826-1827. 6 vol. in-8, |2] f., LXXVIII-418 p.+ [2]. f., 524 p. + [2] f., 552 p. + [2] f., 511 p. + [2] f., 624 p. + [2] f., 481 p., half contemporary olive calf, 4-nerved spine, cold fleurons and fillets, gilt author, title, tomaison, fillet and frieze including Greek, marbled edges (calf evenly faded to tan, q. hinges and/or joins cracked, 3 headpieces and joins restored, spines fragile, 2 headpieces and 2 spines to be reattached, gap in upper jaw), 1 cap frayed, 3 corners dull; light russeting, a few browned pages, 1 plate with pronounced foxing). Second and best edition of this work on modern Greece, the most complete we have ever had. The author has revised, corrected and considerably enlarged it compared to the original of 1820-1821. The collations of the plates differ (35 plates?, 38 plates?). Our copy includes 36 lithographed plates, 16 of which are folding, and numerous in-t. tables, some drawn by Jules Dupré and lithographed by Charles Motte. A staunch philhellene, his main concern in this work is to depict the oppressive state in which the Greeks found themselves under the yoke of the Turks, and to bear witness to the crimes and abominations perpetrated by Ali Pacha. In so doing, he describes the daily life, customs and traditions of the inhabitants of the Peloponnese, as well as their economic and social condition. He also offers a precise description of the geography, archaeology, topography and geology of the regions he visits. Probable autograph ex-dono from the author to M. Lourd[...] in graphite on the fx-t. Ex-libris label R.N. repeated. (Quérard, VII, 315; Chadenat, 155; Droulia, n°1397)
