Karel APPEL, born in Amsterdam in 1921, is a Dutch painter and sculptor.
After studying at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam, in 1948 he co-founded the CoBrA group, a movement of artists from Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam, born in reaction to the quarrel between abstraction and figuration. The artists in this movement came together around their interest in primitive, naive and folk art, and the idea that art could be practiced by everyone.
Referring to Van Gogh and Expressionist figuration, Appel advocated gestural, primitive and childlike expression, with accentuated and often provocative chromaticism.
