GRACQ Julien. Rereading Le Lis de mer [by André Pieyre de Mandiargues]. Autograph manuscript, signed. No place or date; 7 pages in-8 numbered by the author. Le Lis de mer appeared in 1956, and Gracq probably took it up again a few years later. Rereading only the books he loved, he wrote a long eulogy of his fine, limpid writing: "All particularization is elided, all space is given to the element, the sun, the sand, the tree, the sea; of a shore so sizzling, so cruelly given over to the fire of the sky, I know only that of the Caspian such as Gorky evokes in Malva. On this landscape, fresh from the deluge, clings as naively as a mussel to its rock, an ageless human deposit, still mixed with water and sand...".
